Hi - I am having issues connecting my printer to my laptop and iphone. I was able to do so in the past but now when I try connecting my laptop the printer displays a message stating that a code was sent to my phone. I have not received any notifications on my phone. Any idea how to troubleshoot this?

Thank you!

Hi @5Wendy5,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're encountering an issue with the connection process, possibly related to a two-factor authentication or setup code that your printer is requesting. Here's how you can troubleshoot the issue.

Check Phone Notifications

  • Make sure your phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your printer and laptop.
  • Ensure that notifications are enabled for the HP Smart app or related printer services on your phone.
  • Open the HP Smart app manually to check if there’s a prompt or code waiting for you.

Restart Devices

  • Printer: Power cycle your printer by turning it off, waiting for 30 seconds, and turning it back on.
  • Laptop and Phone: Restart both to clear any temporary issues.

Recheck Wi-Fi Connection

  • Confirm that your printer and devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Sometimes, network issues can disrupt the connection.
  • If the printer is using a different network or connection type (e.g., Ethernet), make sure everything is aligned.

Check Printer's Setup

  • Open the printer's control panel and navigate to the Network settings. Ensure it's connected to the correct Wi-Fi network.
  • Try reconnecting it to the Wi-Fi from the printer's settings if needed.

Reinstall HP Smart App

  • If you haven’t received the code, uninstall and reinstall the HP Smart app on your phone and laptop to reset any connection issues.
  • Log back in to the app and try reconnecting the printer.

Manual Printer Setup

  • If the issue persists, try setting up the printer again manually via the HP Smart app:
    • Open the app and select Add Printer or Set Up a New Printer.
    • Follow the steps to connect to your printer.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Check for any firmware updates for your HP printer. You can do this via the HP Smart app or the printer's control panel.

Use WPS or Direct Connect (If Necessary)

  • If you are still unable to connect, you can try setting up the printer using WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) or Direct Connect (a temporary direct Wi-Fi connection between your printer and laptop).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
