HP officejet Pro 8600 plus - many years old.

Has “Printer Failure” status  and attempts to restart etc have all failed.  Have purchased replacement printer but wish to dispose of old one.  I cannot access machine info to restore factory settings as I cannot get past the screen message.  There is no identifier inside or outside of printer re IP address etc

is there an easy way to do so or is the risk minimal?

Hi @Mike4Wales,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus is displaying a "Printer Failure" message and you cannot access any settings or machine info, the risk of data security concerns is minimal. Printers generally do not store sensitive data like personal information or documents once printed, as they don't have hard drives or extensive internal storage like computers do.

Here's what you can consider.

Data Security: Since the printer doesn’t have a hard drive, the risk of data exposure is very low. However, if you're concerned, you can physically remove any internal storage components, if accessible, though this is usually unnecessary for most printers.

Disposal: For disposal, you can follow these steps:

  • Recycling Programs: Many electronics retailers and manufacturers offer recycling programs for old electronics. HP, for instance, has a recycling program that might accept your old printer.
  • Local E-Waste Recycling: Check with your local waste management or recycling centers for proper disposal methods for electronics.

Factory Reset: Since the printer is not operational, you cannot perform a factory reset. This typically isn't an issue for most printers as they don’t store sensitive data.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
