Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.
HP Recommended

I’ve bought an HP 2820e printer and have a new MacBook Air running secuoia. I’ve spent days trying to get the printer and Mac to communicate. I’ve updated the Mac software. The printer is in pairing mode and I’ve added the printer on the Mac in various ways but the printer ignores the Mac. I have a new router. I’ve done all the usual turn off and on again and resets. Will I have to send the printer back?

Hi @Furee,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the printer's connectivity!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Check Basics

  1. Make sure the printer is powered on and has paper/ink installed.

  2. Place the printer close to the router and Mac (same room is best for setup).

  3. Ensure Wi-Fi is working on other devices using the same router.

Network Connection

  1. On the printer, press and hold the Wireless button until the light flashes → this puts it in Wi-Fi setup mode.

  2. On your MacBook:

    • Click the Wi-Fi icon → confirm you’re connected to the same network as the printer.

    • Make sure you are not on a guest or 5 GHz only network (HP prefers 2.4 GHz for setup).

Install HP Smart App

  1. Download HP Smart from the Mac App Store.

  2. Open HP Smart → Sign in with or create an HP account.

  3. Click Add Printer → follow on-screen steps to connect the printer to Wi-Fi.

    • If it fails, select Set up a new printer and connect directly via the temporary “HP Setup” Wi-Fi the printer broadcasts.

Reset Printer System on Mac

  1. On your Mac → Apple Menu > System Settings > Printers & Scanners.

  2. Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list → choose Reset printing system.

  3. Re-add the printer through HP Smart or System Settings.

USB Setup (if Wi-Fi still fails)

  1. Connect the printer to the Mac using a USB cable.

  2. Open HP Smart → it should detect the printer via USB.

  3. Use HP Smart to configure the wireless connection, then disconnect USB once Wi-Fi is working.

Update Firmware

  1. Open HP Smart → go to Printer Settings > Advanced Settings > Tools > Printer Updates.

  2. Install any available updates.

I hope this helps.
