@SWLea,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP printer might be set up with HP+ or Instant Ink, which requires an internet connection. However, if you’ve always used it via USB and it worked before, try the following.

Check USB Connection & Defaults

  • Ensure the USB cable is properly plugged into both the printer and your laptop.
  • Try a different USB port on your laptop.
  • Restart both the printer and your laptop.
  • On your laptop, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers and ensure your printer is set as the default printer.

Disable HP Smart Features

Some HP printers default to requiring an internet connection due to HP Smart settings:

  • Open HP Smart (if installed) and check for any prompts about internet connection.
  • If your printer supports it, try disabling HP Web Services via the printer’s settings menu.

Set Printer to Work Offline (For USB Mode)

  • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click your printer and select Printer Properties.
  • Go to the Ports tab and ensure it's using the USB port and not a network/WiFi connection.
  • Under the Printer menu, make sure Use Printer Offline is unchecked.

Reinstall Printer Drivers

If the issue persists:

  • Uninstall the printer from Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Download and reinstall the latest drivers for your specific HP printer model from HP’s official support site.
  • During installation, choose USB mode instead of network/WiFi.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
