Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

My ISP recently changed my home gateway and added a switch (fibre ONT remained the same).  Internet & TV was working just fine when they left.

What I have discovered is that when my printer goes to sleep, all the computers on that ethernet Lan 4 segment, the internet speed goes from around 300 Mb/s to 2 or 3 Mb/s. Upload does not seem to be affected, remains around 150 Mb/s.  After I wake up the printer, all is normal, until it goes to sleep, then problem of slow internet returns.

The other ethernet Lan segments (1thru 3) are not affected (the switch has 8 ports in total).

The printer had a static address, I changed to a different static address.  Same result.  Changed to a DHCP address, same result.  I tried a different port on the switch, no change.  I have tried wireshark to see what was going on, but when the printer goes to sleep, no traffic is sent to it (which I would expect).  When I disconnect the ethernet cable from the printer, all is good.  I can still print via USB, but my other Lan computers do not see the printer (ie ethernet cable is disconnected).

It appears I have some kind of conflict affecting internet traffic, but only when the printer is asleep.

I am at a loss as to what might be going on.  Anyone have any ideas of where to look or what to try next?

Thanks.

It seems that your switch is acting like a hub instead of a switch.

I am guessing you have a modem with one or more RJ45 connectors and an 8 port hub or switch.

The printer is hard wired to the switch. Can you connect it to one of the ports on the modem instead?

Possibly your switch is managed.  Can you find a firmware update?

Can you log into the switch and makes sure that all of the ports are auto switching?

Google's AI might be helpful here

Thanks for the feedback and comments.  A few updates:

1.  All devices after the modem/gateway are switches and none are managed.  I did not look for firmware updates, thinking the switches are not managed, no way to update them.

2.  All modem/gateway ports are auto speed selected.  Switches same.

3.  I have moved the printer closer to the 1st switch after the modem (versus the previous configuration of a 2nd switch and then the office switch).  Seems to have cleared everything up, however,

4.  This morning, it was broken again and after many, many tries, I finally got it back to working as described above.  So far, this seems to be stable.

I am going to let this stabilize for a while and then I might do some more research as to why this did not work as initially built.

Thanks again for all of your assistance.

The problem may possibly be due to one or more devices streaming and hogging all the bandwidth.  Turning the devices off and on may allow the switch to be able to communicate properly with the printer. This happened to me with several cameras on a switch.  In my case the cheap switch simply hung and had to be reset.  I set the frame rate down but eventually wired all the cameras and the video server to a dedicated router.
