Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

My printer used to work just fine, then it stopped. When I checked the printer the address that is listed is a MAC address, not the format previously used. My laptop won't allow me to change the printer address to this MAC address.  Help!

Hi @sarahmckinley,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand how  it must be when your printer suddenly stops working after it had been fine before.

Could you please share the printer model number and whether it’s connected via Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, or USB?

Also, let me know if you’re using Windows, macOS, or another operating system on your laptop.

In the meantime, here are a few steps you can try:

Check printer IP address: Printers typically use an IP address, not a MAC address, for communication. On the printer’s control panel, look for “Network Settings” or “Wireless Settings” to confirm the IP address.

Update printer driver: Outdated drivers can cause connectivity issues. Visit HP’s support website  https://support.hp.com/ to download the latest driver for your model.

Re-add printer: Remove the printer from your laptop’s settings and add it again using the correct IP address.

Restart devices: Power cycle your printer, router, and laptop. This often refreshes the network connection.

Check router settings: Ensure your router hasn’t changed network configurations that might affect the printer’s IP assignment.

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
