HP OfficeJet 5255 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

My laptop keeps losing my printer. The printer, which occasionally works, can be found in Windows settings but the setup fails. The same thing happens when using HP Smart or HP Print and Scan Doctor. Sometimes a setup will work but is only successful for one print job.

Hi @AltoAnnie1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you are experiencing issues with your HP OfficeJet 5255 All-In-One Printer consistently losing connection with your laptop, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the problem. Here's a step-by-step guide.

Check Hardware Connections:

  • Ensure that all cables connecting the printer to your laptop are securely plugged in.
  • If you are using a wireless connection, make sure the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your laptop.

Restart Devices:

  • Turn off both your printer and laptop.
  • Wait for a minute and then turn them back on.
  • Try to reconnect and print.

Update Printer Drivers:

  • Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers installed on your laptop. Visit the HP website and download the latest drivers for your specific printer model.

Check for Windows Updates:

  • Make sure your Windows operating system is up to date. Sometimes, printer connectivity issues are resolved through Windows updates.

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool to diagnose and fix printing and scanning problems. This tool can often identify and automatically resolve common issues.

Reinstall the Printer:

  • Remove the existing printer setup from your laptop.
  • Reinstall the printer by following the HP instructions. You may use the installation CD or download the latest software from the HP website.

Configure Firewall/Antivirus Settings:

  • Check your firewall and antivirus settings to ensure they are not blocking the printer connection. Temporarily disable them for testing purposes (if applicable) and see if the issue persists.

Static IP Address for the Printer:

  • Assign a static IP address to your printer to avoid potential IP conflicts. This can be done through the printer settings or your router's configuration page.

Check Wi-Fi Signal Strength:

  • Ensure that the printer is within the range of a stable Wi-Fi signal. Weak signals can cause intermittent connectivity issues.

Remember to refer to your printer's manual and documentation for model-specific instructions.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
