My printer says it's connected to my home network and when I go to the application HP Smart it says it's not connected. Thoughts?

Hi @Burtlf

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It’s frustrating when your HP OfficeJet Pro 8740 shows as connected to your home network but isn’t recognized by HP Smart

Here are some detailed troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue:

1. Verify Printer Network Connection

  • Print a Network Configuration Report from the printer’s control panel.
  • Check if the network status says Connected.
  • If it’s connected but HP Smart doesn’t recognize it, proceed to the next steps.

2. Restart Devices

  • Power cycle your router: Turn it off, wait 60 seconds, then turn it back on.
  • Restart your printer and computer.

3. Check Firewall & VPN Settings

  • Some firewalls or VPNs may block communication between HP Smart and the printer.
  • Temporarily disable your firewall or VPN and try reconnecting.

4. Reinstall HP Smart

  • Uninstall HP Smart from your computer.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Download and reinstall HP Smart from the Microsoft Store.

5. Manually Add Printer in HP Smart

  • Open HP Smart and click Add Printer.
  • Enter the printer’s IP address (found in the Network Configuration Report).
  • If HP Smart still doesn’t detect it, try setting up a new printer.

6. Update Printer Firmware

Let me know if any of these steps help! 😊
