Hi @tpteresa,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP 2800 series printer goes offline at times and only prints intermittently. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Check the printer’s power and status
Make sure the printer is powered on and not showing any error lights.
Intermittent power or sleep wake-up delays can make the printer appear offline.

Confirm the printer is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network
Print or view the Network Information page from the printer to confirm the Wi-Fi name.
Ensure it matches exactly with the network your computer is using (not a guest or extender network).

Restart the printer, computer, and router
Turn off the printer and unplug it for 60 seconds.
Restart the router and computer, then power the printer back on and allow it to reconnect.

Disable “Use Printer Offline” on the computer
Open Devices and Printers on your computer.
Right-click the HP 2800 series printer and make sure “Use Printer Offline” is unchecked.

Remove and re-add the printer
Remove the printer from Devices and Printers.
Restart the computer, then add the printer again so Windows creates a fresh connection.

Check Wi-Fi signal stability
Even if the printer is close to the router, interference can cause dropouts.
Avoid placing the printer near microwaves, cordless phones, or metal objects.

Set the printer as the default printer
In Devices and Printers, right-click the HP 2800 series and select Set as default.
This prevents jobs from being sent to an inactive or old printer entry.

Use HP Smart to manage the connection
Open the HP Smart app and confirm the printer shows as Ready and Online.
If it shows Offline there as well, the issue is network communication rather than print software.

I hope this helps.
