HP ENVY 5532 e-All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

My hp 5530 envy printer doesn’t recognize hp ink cartridges after I put aftermarket ink cartridges in and they didn’t work. I’ve tried the hard set up and the cleaning of the boards on the cartridges, but still doesn’t recognize it.

Hi @Epenkava,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Envy 5530 printer is not recognizing ink cartridges after using aftermarket ones, the issue might be due to residual firmware settings, cartridge memory, or potential damage to the printer's contacts. Here's what you can try to resolve the issue.

Reset the Printer

  • Unplug the printer while it’s turned on.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on. This clears minor firmware glitches.

Clean Cartridge Contacts

  • Power off the printer.
  • Remove the ink cartridges.
  • Use a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol to gently clean:
    • The electrical contacts on the cartridges.
    • The contacts inside the printer where the cartridges connect.
  • Let the components dry completely before reinserting the cartridges.

Perform a Hard Reset

  • With the printer on, disconnect it from power.
  • While unplugged, hold down the Power button for 30 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Reconnect the printer and power it back on.

Reinstall Original HP Cartridges

  • Ensure that the cartridges you’re installing are genuine HP cartridges that are compatible with the HP Envy 5530.
  • If they still don’t work, try a new set of cartridges to ensure it’s not an issue with the cartridges themselves.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Aftermarket cartridges can trigger printer firmware issues. Updating your printer firmware may help:
    1. Go to the HP Support page.
    2. Search for your printer model and download the latest firmware update.
    3. Follow the instructions to install the update.

Reset the Printer to Factory Settings

  • Access the printer’s Setup menu.
  • Navigate to Tools or Preferences and select Restore Factory Defaults.
  • After the reset, reinstall your genuine HP cartridges.

Check for Lock-Out Features

  • Some HP printers have a feature that blocks the use of aftermarket cartridges. In the printer settings (accessible via the printer’s menu or HP Smart app), look for options related to Cartridge Protection or Ink Authentication and disable them.

Inspect for Firmware Lock

  • If the printer still doesn’t recognize the genuine cartridges, it’s possible the aftermarket cartridges triggered a firmware lock.

Test with Another Set of Cartridges

  • If you have another set of HP cartridges (even used ones), try installing them to see if the printer recognizes any cartridges at all. This helps rule out cartridge-specific issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
