Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.
HP Recommended
Microsoft Windows 11

In recent days I have installed 3 printers. 2x envy 7200 and one envy 7900

Installation went OK, all test OK, HP Smart installed and printing from windows apps OK.

Operating system: in two cases w11 and in one case w10

But with all installations, after some time, let say 10-15min, printer goes offline as far as the  HP Smart or windows functions are concerned.

Wifi blue lamp still lit and symbol on the printer screen shows still printer being connected to the network.

Attempt to check with ping results in abt every 4th ping being answered with a delay of abt 500-1000ms.

So basically connection is here.

Attempting print is not successful.

In all 3 cases, printers are abt 2meter distance from the router. Router new with updates via provider.  Two routers in Switzerland, one in Czech republic.

The only way to print is to switch off the printer (takes abt 1min) and start again (takes abt 4-5min)

Then printing and scanning is possible for some 10-15min, after this printer goes again offline.

How can I make printers work normally, being switched on , and actually work?

just in case someone asks:

yes, all the firmware in the printers is latest, update done after installation.

All other services on the same network are OK.

Only all HP printers are unreachable.

Unreachable means in this case, no two way communication possible.

Ping still possible but with very long latency, all other targets in the network have no problems.

the usual texts 'help' are all worked through, no help at all.
Advise which ends in to restart the printer are funny, as this works, but after some 10min printer is offline again.
This can not be serious advise to restart the printer each time oen needs to print something?

I would need some advise permanently solving this situation.

As mentioned, those are 3 independent installations, each with own router and network and all do disconnect after some 10-15 min.

And yes, restarting the printer works, but this is not valid solution as printers were bought as to be operational as any other printer.

From HP , I would expect some qualified answer rather then refering to some general advises which do not cure the problem at all.

Following those advises does not help. The procedure needs to be done each time the user wants print or scann something. Every 15min again and again. This can not be serious solution to apparently well known problem.

Expected from a printer is to be ready and stby at any time and when user needs print it has to happen immediately and not after the printer has been switched off and on each time.

This is here 3 HP printers behaving the same, and HP is not able to correct it in some way?

I need final solution, not just pointless advises of restarting the printer.

Hi @ottosykora,

I hear you, it’s frustrating when printers keep going offline after just a few minutes. Let’s try a few structured steps that aren’t too much effort and can help stabilize the connection so your Envy printers stay ready when you need them.

Assign a Static IP

This prevents the printer from dropping off when the router reassigns addresses.

Open the printer’s Embedded Web Server (type its IP in a browser)

Go to Network Settings > Advanced Settings

Set a manual IP outside your router’s DHCP range

Save and restart the printer

You can refer to this document to manually assign an IP address.

Force 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi

These models are more stable on 2.4 GHz networks than on 5 GHz.

Log into your router settings

Assign the printer to the 2.4 GHz SSID only

Disable band steering if enabled

Keep the printer within 2–3 meters of the router

Update the printer firmware

HP regularly releases new firmware versions with printer enhancements or issue fixes. Update firmware regularly to make sure you are getting the most out of your printer.

CAUTION:

Do not turn off the printer during a firmware update. This can permanently damage your printer.

From the printer control panel (network printers only): Many HP printers with control panel menus can install updates directly from HP. Updating the firmware from the control panel varies by printer model.

For example, touch the Setup icon , touch Printer Maintenance, touch Update Printer, and then touch Check Now. Any new updates install automatically.

From the HP app:

From the HP website: Go to HP Software and Driver Downloads, follow the prompts to open the downloads page for your printer. Click Download next to any updates listed under Firmware, and then open and follow the HP Printer Update prompts to update the firmware.

Clicking Download under the Firmware section

For more information, go to Update the firmware on an HP printer.

Let me know if it helped.

I will arrange the fixed IP out of the DHCP range.

Update of firmware: I did this from the printers display, later checked via HPsmart, this tells me all uptodate.

Router: the particular routers involved do not allow me to set frequency band per device. I can only generally set wlan to 2.4 or 5.

What bothers me, I found that there is some kind of 'sleep' mode or similar, reachable via the web interface. There is no way to disable it.

Hi @ottosykora,

The “sleep mode” you see in the web interface is built into the printer’s firmware and cannot be disabled outright. HP designs this to reduce energy consumption, so there’s no option to turn it off completely.

What you can do is adjust it so the printer stays responsive longer:

Extend sleep timer

From the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Preferences > Sleep/Auto‑Off and set the maximum delay.

Keep HP Smart active

The app maintains background communication and helps prevent the printer from appearing offline.

The sleep mode itself can’t be disabled, but extending the timer and combining it with a static IP (which you’ve already arranged) usually stabilizes the connection so the printer remains online without constant restarts.

this can not be done on the 7200, as the setting jumps immediately back to 15min, no way to save new setting

how should this be done?

The associated PC does not run all the time, it is switched off when not needed.

As it is a notebook, it will anyway switch itself off after some time.

Are you trying to say that HP printers can be operated only on desktop computers running all the time?
