HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Wireless Printer
macOS 10.13 High Sierra

My HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Wireless Printer has been connected to my iMac via USB and has always worked (though sometimes I need to unplug and replug the USB cable).

We installed a new modem and now I'm getting a message that the printer isn't connected to the network and when I try to print I get a "not connected" error.

I don't WANT to be connected. I wanted to use the USB connection. How can I let the printer know this? Have tried restarting, unplugging and replugging USB cable.
Thanks!

Hi,

Is the USB cable directly connected to a USB port of your Mac or may through any adapter to another port of your PC?

Following your description of sporadic need to reconnect the cable, I would suspect the cable first.

Make sure it is directly connected to the Mac unless it have no USB port, do not use any USB extension or hub but directly connect it to the computer as possible, also make sure the cable  is not longer than 1.5 - 2 meters long.

Try plugging the cable to another port of your PC and also unplug and re-plug it to the USB port of the printer, the top port at the back of the printer among the 4 ports.

If there is no change, replace the USB cable with a new one and check, I believe the problem is with the cable itself, just a generic error message is likely shown by Airprint.

Please let me know the results,

Shlomi
