Microsoft Windows 11

I am receiving a message to hook my printer to the server. I printed a diagnostic page and see that the DNS failed. Is this the problem? I don't know how to obtain the domain either, if I need this. Please advise.

Welcome to the HP User Community.

Where to start??

I suggest you take a look at your printer's user manual.

Reading the manual chapter on "Connect your printer" provides a good basic explanation and can help you understand the what you need to know and what you need to do.  Note:  The name of the chapter varies by printer / document.

Connections - Automatic or Advanced

Connecting the printer to your home network usually involves either using an Automatic connection method or having to provide the following advanced information during the setup:

  • IP Address
  • Subnet Mask
  • Default Gateway
  • DNS Address

What about...

DNS is part of the network connection setup - it has to do with your Internet Service Provider that provides your access to the Internet.

For example, you might be using Comcast / Xfinity as your ISP.

Example - USA - Comcast DNS Servers

Comcast DNS Servers

http://www.comcast.com

IPv4 DNS Servers

Primary DNS: 75.75.75.75

Secondary DNS: 75.75.76.76

IPv6 DNS Servers

Primary DNS: 2001:558:feed::1

Secondary DNS: 2001:558:feed::2

Reference - How to find DNS information

Each ISP issues a different network address that you use to connect to their service.

Public DNS

What if you don't have an ISP - or if you cannot connect using your ISP information?

If you do not have an ISP, or if you are having continuing connection issues, use Google Public DNS.

If you need the name of a domain other than the standard "WORKGROUP" used in a home network, you might be trying to connect your unknown printer to a work environment.  Ask your IT department for your domain name.
