Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.
HP Recommended

I am connected to the internet, went through the steps of unplugging units, did a virus scan, and have restarted my pc multiple times. Printer error tells me it is offline, yet when I look at HP Smart, it is asleep, but under troubleshoot it is ready to print.

I have 2 HP laptops that are connected to this printer. My pc prints sporadically and the other not at all, even though the HP Smart states the printer is asleep.

I am at my wits end, especially when the spouse needs to print something and can't. Both pc's are wirelessly connected.

Hi @88harleybiker

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Let’s go step by step to get your printer consistently online and ready to print from both laptops:

1. Wake the Printer

  • On the printer’s control panel, press the power button or tap the screen if it has one.
  • If the printer is asleep, this ensures it fully wakes before attempting to print.

2. Verify Wireless Connection

  • On the printer, open the wireless settings and confirm it is connected to your Wi-Fi network.
  • If disconnected, reconnect it to the same Wi-Fi network that both laptops are using.
  • Restart the router to refresh the connection if needed.

3. Check Printer Status in Windows

  • On each laptop, open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click your printer and ensure “Set as Default Printer” is selected.
  • If you see multiple instances of the printer, remove duplicates and keep only the active one.

4. Clear Print Queue

  • Right-click the printer icon, select See what’s printing, and cancel all pending jobs.
  • A stuck job can cause the printer to appear offline.

5. Run Diagnose & Fix in HP App

  • Open the HP App on each laptop.
  • Select your printer, then go to Printer Settings > Diagnose & Fix.
  • Follow the guided steps to automatically resolve offline or sleep issues.

6. Update Printer Firmware and Drivers

  • In the HP App, check for updates under Printer Settings > Advanced Settings.
  • On each laptop, ensure the HP printer driver is up to date.

7. Test Printing

  • Print a test page from each laptop.
  • If one laptop still fails, remove the printer from Devices and Printers, restart the laptop, and add the printer again through the HP App.

By following these steps, the printer should stay online and respond consistently across both laptops. If the issue recurs, focus on the wireless connection stability and ensure the printer is always set as the default device on each PC.
