Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

Hi, we just got an HP printer (model noted above). Initially, the HP Smart app connected it without a problem and it printed. Then, for some reason the connection stopped working. Specifically, the printer says it's connected to the same network as the computer (an Android hotspot), but whenever we try to print literally anything - from Word, Excel, Edge, even the "Print Anywhere" on the HP app, it fails to establish a connection and effectively says "wait for printer connection" (which never happens).

We've tried factory settings, taking out the plug and putting it back in, uninstalling and reinstalling HP Smart (which claims there's nothing wrong with the printer in its diagnosis). Worse, whenever we try and print anything, the program meant to print freezes up for some reason because of the connection issues that aren't supposed to be there.

What can we do?

Hi @aiwac,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for explaining the situation in detail. The issue you’re facing, printer connected to the same network, but HP app and apps freezing, usually points to network instability or IP assignment conflicts, especially when using mobile hotspots. HP printers rely on a stable local network for communication, and hotspots can sometimes cause intermittent connectivity.

Why This Happens

  • Mobile hotspots often use NAT (Network Address Translation) and dynamic IP assignment, which can confuse the printer and PC.
  • HP Smart requires consistent IP and Web Services for Print Anywhere.
  • Factory resets and app reinstalls don’t help if the network layer is unstable.

Recommended Fix Steps

1. Assign a Static IP to the Printer

  • On the printer:
    • Go to Wireless Settings → Advanced Settings → IP Settings.
    • Set a Manual IP (e.g., 192.168.43.50 if your hotspot uses 192.168.43.x).
  • This prevents IP changes that break the connection.

2. Re-enable Web Services

  • On the printer:
    • Setup → Web Services → Remove Web Services.
    • Then Enable Web Services again.
  • This refreshes HP Smart connectivity.

3. Update Printer Firmware

4. Use HP App Correctly

  • Ensure your phone and printer are on the same hotspot.
  • Open HP app → Add Printer → Select your printer.
  • If it still says “Wait for printer connection,” restart the app and printer.

5. Alternative: Direct Wi-Fi Printing

  • Enable Wi-Fi Direct on the printer:
    • Settings → Wi-Fi Direct → ON.
  • Connect your PC or phone directly to the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct network (shown on the printer screen).
  • Print without relying on the hotspot.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
