Envy5020
macOS 10.15 Catalina

I have an Envy 5020 and its set up fine- but every tine I come to print the Mac can't find it - its just sat as idle in the print queue.  The steps in the troubleshooting guide work: delete the printer, reset  the printer, reload the Easy install then it reconnects fine again. Sometimes I have had to completely power the printer off and once or twice turn the router off too. It complains it cannot find bonjour. yes they are on. the same subnet.

This affects  all the computers we have used on this.  But I have to do this EVERY time I need to print. is there a more permanent fix that doesn't involve me stopping whatever I was doing and spending 20 minutes resetting everything - usually to print homework about 4 minutes before the bus is due to leave?

@FLUFFY5, Welcome to HP Support Community!

To be able to assist you better, I would like to know the following:

  • Are the printer and PC connected to the same network?
  • Is your router dual-band enabled i.e., both 2.4GHz and 5GHz?
  • What is the distance between the router and the printer?
  • Is there any antivirus software installed on your computer?
  • Could you perform a ping test using the Mac Network Utility and let me know the results?

Use the printer IP address to perform a ping test, the printer IP can be located by selecting the wireless icon on the printer display.

The wireless status menu on your Mac should also give us quite a lot of information that would help us identify the issue. You can press and hold option-click the WiFi icon and then use shift-command-5 to take the screenshot. Press the space bar when the icon turns into a camera. Share the ping test results and the screenshot with us.

Also, check with your Internet service provider if your router is able to forward 'Bonjour packets'.

Bonjour locates devices such as printers, other computers, and the services that those devices offer on a local network using multicast Domain Name System (mDNS) service records. The software comes built-in with Apple's macOS and iOS operating systems.

Keep me posted for further assistance.

Not sure if the screenshots have come through... Ive pasted but doesn't look happy from here.  According to the sys I do have bonjour on, and the ISP is irrelevant as the wifi router isn't theirs - its a D link.  Its interesting that the direct print seems to be up, I must admit I've not tried that.

Last time I went through the whole lets reset the printer routine  I got the print off I needed and then did a ping pretty much straight after - dead as a dodo

@FLUFFY5

There is a 100% packet loss which means there is no communication between the devices.

Use the guided troubleshooter Troubleshooting | Wireless Printing Center for instruction to isolate and resolve the issue.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
