Hi @GDC11,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand you have trouble with the device. HP printers often struggle with 5 GHz Wi-Fi for a few reasons:

Why This Happens

  • Many HP printers only support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, not 5 GHz.
  • Even if your printer supports dual-band, 5 GHz has a shorter range and is more prone to drops through walls.
  • Some routers use band steering, which can confuse devices like printers.

Steps to Fix

  1. Check Printer Specs
    • Confirm if your printer supports 5 GHz. Most HP consumer printers (DeskJet, OfficeJet, Smart Tank, LaserJet) only support 2.4 GHz.

  2. Connect to 2.4 GHz
    • If your router broadcasts both bands under the same SSID, create a separate SSID for 2.4 GHz and connect the printer to that.
    • This usually solves disconnect issues.

  3. Update Printer Firmware
  4. Assign a Static IP
    • In your router settings, reserve an IP for the printer to prevent DHCP conflicts.

  5. Disable Band Steering (Optional)
    • If your router uses Smart Connect or band steering, temporarily disable it to keep the printer on 2.4 GHz.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
