Hi @michaelmcandrew,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When you receive the message "printer in use" when you try to print from your HP 8715 printer, it usually means that there is a communication error between your printer and the computer, or that there is a print job stuck in the printer queue.

Here are some steps you can try to resolve this issue.

  • Check if there are any print jobs stuck in the printer queue. To do this, go to "Devices and Printers" in the Control Panel, right-click on your printer, and select "See what's printing". If there are any print jobs in the queue, try canceling them and then try printing again.
  • Restart both your computer and printer. Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for a few minutes before plugging it back in and turning it on. Also, restart your computer to refresh the communication between the printer and computer.
  • Check the printer status. Make sure that the printer is online, and that there are no error messages or warning lights on the printer. If there are any issues, resolve them first before trying to print again.
  • Update the printer driver. Go to the HP support website and download the latest printer driver for your printer model. Install the driver and then try printing again.
  • Disable any firewall or antivirus software temporarily. Sometimes, these programs can block the communication between the printer and the computer. If disabling the software resolves the issue, try configuring it to allow the printer to communicate with the computer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
