Hi @veebrad,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand you’re using HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 with macOS Sequoia (or possibly macOS 10.14 Mojave), and after replacing a color cartridge, you're receiving this error: “There is a problem with the printer or ink system.” This is a critical ink system error, typically caused by: A defective or incompatible cartridge or an Ink system blockage or an air lock.

Please try the steps below and let me know how it goes:

1. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall and the printer.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.

2. Check the Cartridge Installation

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove and reinsert all cartridges, ensuring they click firmly into place.
  • Make sure the orange pull tab and plastic tape were removed from the new cartridge.

3. Clean the Cartridge Vents

  • Use a pin or paperclip to gently clear the vent holes on top of the cartridge (especially the one you replaced).
  • Wipe the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth and distilled water.

4. Clean the Printhead

  • If the error persists, the printhead may be clogged:
    • Use the printer menu: Setup > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
    • If that fails, you may need to manually clean the printhead (only if you're comfortable doing so).

5. Try a Different Cartridge

  • If possible, try replacing the new cartridge with another genuine HP cartridge.
  • Sometimes a defective or incompatible cartridge can trigger this error.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
