Hello,
unfortunately, printing with my WiFi printer (Laserjet M140) doesn't work.
The reason is probably an incorrect communication between the printer and laptop (different IP addresses).
Laptop/Router:
IP-Adress Printer:
The printer is shown to me as offline in the document's print settings but as "available/ready" in HP Smart. The printing process doesn't start until I connect the printer and laptop with the cable. A restart (router, printer, laptop) has already taken place - no change.
I can't furthermore find a way to remove the printer to restart the WiFi connection process.
Anyone any ideas?
Thanks in advance for the help and greetings

Hi @Zumm,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP LaserJet MFP M140w printer is due to a network communication problem, likely caused by the printer and laptop being assigned different IP addresses. This can prevent the printer from properly connecting over Wi-Fi, even though it shows as "available/ready" in HP Smart.
Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:
1. Check IP Addresses
- Make sure the printer and the laptop are connected to the same Wi-Fi network and that they are on the same subnet. Sometimes, routers can assign different IP ranges for wired and wireless devices, which could cause communication issues.
- How to check:
- On your printer, print the Network Configuration Page to find the IP address (you can usually do this from the printer's control panel or using the HP Smart app).
- On your laptop, open Command Prompt and type ipconfig to check the IP address of your laptop.
- Compare both IP addresses—if they are in different ranges (e.g., 192.168.1.xxx vs. 192.168.0.xxx), that could be the issue.
2. Assign a Static IP to the Printer
- If the printer is obtaining a dynamic IP address from the router, it might change after a restart, which can cause the connection to break.
- You can assign a static IP address to the printer to ensure it always uses the same address.
- Steps to do this:
- Access the printer's embedded web server (EWS) by entering its IP address into a web browser.
- Look for the Network Settings or TCP/IP Settings section, and set a static IP address within your router’s IP range.
3. Remove and Reinstall the Printer HP printer setup (HP Smart app)
- Remove the printer from HP Smart:
- In HP Smart, go to your printer’s settings, and there should be an option to remove or delete the printer.
- Re-add the printer:
- After removing the printer, restart both the router and printer again.
- Open the HP Smart app and re-add the printer using Wi-Fi setup, ensuring it’s on the same network as your laptop.
4. Ensure Printer and Laptop Are on Same Network
- Double-check that both your laptop and printer are on the same Wi-Fi network (some routers have separate networks for 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands). You might want to try connecting both devices to the same band (either 2.4GHz or 5GHz).
5. Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Ensure that the printer firmware is up to date. This can be done via the HP Smart app or the EWS (embedded web server). Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)
6. Try Printing via IP Address
- If you're still having trouble, you can manually add the printer using its IP address on your laptop:
- Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Add Printer.
- Choose Add a Printer Using TCP/IP Address and enter the printer's IP address.
These steps should help address the issue and restore your wireless printing functionality. Let me know if you need further guidance!
