Hi @lainerrrr,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Since you've unsubscribed from Instant Ink and passed the printer on, your friend is likely running into one of the most common issues after transferring an HP printer: the printer may still be linked to your HP account (HP+ / HP Smart account lock), and that can block network setup or usage with new cartridges.

Here’s how to fully prepare the printer for a new owner and help them get it connected:

Step 1: Remove Printer from Your HP Account

You said you've unsubscribed from Instant Ink, which is great, but also make sure you've:

  • Logged into HP Smart with your account.
  • Removed the printer from Devices in your account.
  • Unlink HP+ / disabled web services if possible.

This helps ensure your account doesn't "own" the printer anymore.

Step 2: Perform a Full Factory Reset on the Printer

This clears all Wi-Fi settings, email accounts, and HP+ links.

For most HP Envy or Officejet models:

  1. On the printer screen, tap the gear icon (Settings).
  2. Go to Printer Maintenance or Settings > Restore Settings.
  3. Choose Restore Factory Defaults or Reset All Settings.
  4. Confirm and let the printer restart.

⚠️ Note: If your printer is an HP+ model, it may still require a new owner to set it up with their own HP account via the HP Smart app before it becomes fully usable.

Step 3: Use Regular HP Ink

After Instant Ink cancellation, only standard HP genuine cartridges will work, not any remaining Instant Ink ones.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
