Common problems for Connectivity Issues

ENVY 5540
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

If I leave my printer powered up and when I go to use it just will not be recognized. I press the power button and nothing happens. It will not wake up, it will not power off, but there is power to the printer because the little blue light above the wireless connection indicator on the panel is lit. I have to unplug it and then plug it back in for the printer to be recognized. Why does this happen.

 Hi @deltatrooper1,

I'd like to help!

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor to check connectivity

Download a special version of HP Print and Scan Doctor specifically created to help with printer offline conditions.

  1. Download HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  2. Run HPPSdr.exe from the download location on your computer.
  3. Once HP Print and Scan Doctor opens, click Start, and then select your printer.
    • If your printer in not in the list, turn it off and on, and then click Retry.
    • If there is a connection problem, follow the instructions in HP Print and Scan Doctor.
  4. If a screen prompts you to turn on printer updates, click Yes.
  5. If a screen prompts you to make your printer the default printer, click Yes.

Set a manual IP-

To set a manual IP and try the steps below -

--->Touch on the wifi icon ((i)) on the printer, and take down the IP address

--->Open a web browser (ex Chrome or Mozilla) and type in the printer's IP

--->then go to network ---> general ---> network protocols ---> select IPV4 only-->apply

--->go to wireless ---> wireless 802.11---> select manual ip ---> apply

--->Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS.

--->then go to settings on the main ews page --> power management ---> select sleep mode to max 15min

Connect the printer to TCP/IP port

--->Touch on the wifi icon ((i)) on the printer, and take down the IP address

a. Click Start/Devices and Printers.  Right-click on your HP Printer.  Select Printer Properties.  Select the Ports tab at the top.

b.    Select Add Port.  Select Standard TCP/IP Port.  Select New Port.

c.    Follow the Add Port Wizard.  Under Printer Name or IP Address, .  Example:  192.168.1.15.  The IP address will be copied under Port Name.

d.    Select Next and Finish the Wizard.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I downloaded the HP Print and Scan Doctor and ran the program.  In the "Set manual -" section in the message when I get to this part "--->Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS." there is no place to enter first or second DNS.

Could you share an image of the manual IP screen on the EWS page?

ENVY PRO 6400 on Instant Ink.

I'm about to cancel my Instant Ink subscription and go back to standard inks because my printer does exactly the same  thing. it goes to sleep and will not print because it cannot connect to the internet. The Printer information page says the WiFi signal is strong and the printer has an IP address. I think that the HP servers that it is trying to get to are not available. My Broadband is operating perfectly from my laptop next door to the printer. This error is the printer not able to call home and wont print.  I am not happy.

I respect your decision.

I'd recommend you try the below steps -

Restart the computer, printer, and router

To resolve many connectivity issues, restart the computer, printer, and router.

NOTE:

The following steps temporarily disconnect network and Internet connections, and require restarting your computer. Complete any tasks or downloads in progress before you continue.

  1. Turn off the router by pressing the power button or disconnecting the power cord.

  2. Turn off the printer.

  3. Close all running programs on your computer, and then shut down the computer.

  4. Press the power button or reconnect the power cord to the router, and then wait for the Internet activity light to display a normal connected status.

  5. Turn on the printer.

  6. Turn on the computer.

  7. Try to turn on Web Services

Check the Internet proxy server settings

For networks that use proxy servers, update the Web Services settings in the printer EWS with the proxy information.

  1. Locate the Internet proxy settings.

    • Windows: Search Windows for Internet, and then click Internet Options in the list of results. On the Internet Properties window, click the Connections tab, select your network, if necessary, and then click Settings.

The network settings menu displays with the proxy settings.

    • Mac: Open System Preferences, and then click Network. On the Network window, click Advanced, click the Proxies tab, and then select your proxy, if necessary.

  2. Write down the Address and Port values for your proxy server connection.

  3. From the EWS, click the Web Services tab, and then click Proxy Settings.

  4. Type the Address and Port values for your proxy server connection, and then click Apply.

  5. Try to turn on Web Services.

Also, try updating the printer's firmware - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

Hope this helps, keep me posted!
