HP OfficeJet Pro 8028 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I had to replace my internet modem.  All my devices found the new modem address, except my HP printer. I have followed all of the chat instructions, ran the diagnostics.  Plugged the printer into the modem.  Still does not recognize the modem.  Short of throwing the printer away, I'm looking for guidance.  I am not computer savvy so some of the language means nothing to me.  Any help is appreciated.

@bresnahan, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Let’s fix that connection problem — don’t worry, we’ll keep it simple and step-by-step 😊.
When your HP OfficeJet Pro 8028 won’t recognize a new modem or Wi-Fi, it usually just needs to be reconnected to the new network since your printer still remembers the old one. Here’s exactly what to do:

Reset the Printer’s Network Settings

This clears the old Wi-Fi connection from memory.

On the printer touchscreen, tap the Wi-Fi icon or go to Setup (gear icon).

Choose Network Setup → Restore Network Settings.

Confirm the reset and wait about 1 minute.
You’ll see the blue Wi-Fi light start blinking — that means it’s ready for setup again.

Reconnect the Printer to Your New Wi-Fi

You have two simple options:

Option A – Using the Printer Screen

On the printer, tap Wireless Setup Wizard (in the Network Setup menu).

Let it search for networks.

Select your new Wi-Fi name (SSID) from the list.

Enter your Wi-Fi password carefully.

Wait until the printer says Connected and the Wi-Fi light stops blinking.

Option B – Using HP App

On your phone or computer, open HP App.

If you don’t have it, download it from: HP App – For HP Printers, Laptops, and Tech Accessories | HP® Official Site

Click Add Printer.

Follow the on-screen steps to set up Wi-Fi — the app will help reconnect your printer.

Test the Connection

Print a Wireless Network Test Report from the printer’s menu (under Network Settings) to confirm it’s connected to the same Wi-Fi as your computer.

Try printing a simple test page from your PC.

If the Printer Still Won’t Connect

Try these quick checks:

Make sure your Wi-Fi is 2.4 GHz, not only 5 GHz. The OfficeJet 8028 connects to 2.4 GHz networks.

Ensure router security is set to WPA2 (not WPA3-only).

Restart the printer, modem, and PC in that order.

If possible, connect via USB first, then use HP app to reconfigure Wi-Fi.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
