My printer is asking for an 8 digit router pin, my router has more digits. So where can I retrieve it?

Hi @Tisa2

Welcome to the HP Support Community! Thanks for posting your query!

We're here to help you get back up and running.

When your printer asks for an 8‑digit router PIN, it’s referring to the WPS PIN (Wi‑Fi Protected Setup), not your regular Wi‑Fi password.

That’s why it looks different from the longer passphrase you normally use to connect devices.

Here’s how you can locate it:

  • On the router itself: Many routers have a WPS PIN printed on a label, often near the serial number or default Wi‑Fi credentials.
  • In the router’s web interface: Log in to your router’s configuration page (usually by typing its IP address, like 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, into a browser). Look under Wireless Settings > WPS. The PIN should be listed there.
  • On the printer’s control panel: Some HP printers can generate their own WPS PIN. When you select Wireless Setup > WPS PIN on the printer’s display, it will show you an 8‑digit code. You then enter that code into the router’s WPS setup page.

So in short, the 8‑digit PIN is either generated by the printer or found in your router’s WPS settings—not the same as your Wi‑Fi password.

Would you like me to walk you through how to check if your HP printer can generate its own WPS PIN directly from the control panel? That’s often the simplest way to complete the setup.
