My iPad and iPhone will connect with my printer.  When it finishes printing there is nothing on the paper. Why?

Hi @Zorro1937,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how confusing and disappointing this feels. You hear your printer waking up…the rollers pull the paper through…the machine hums like it’s doing everything right, and then the page comes out completely blank.

It’s like the printer is breathing, but nothing reaches the page. Let’s go step by step.

1. Check the ink levels inside HP Smart

Your iPhone/iPad shows ink levels clearly in the HP Smart app.

  1. Open HP Smart
  2. Tap your printer
  3. Look for Ink Levels

If one of the colors is empty or very low, the printer may still run, but will print blank.

2. Make sure your printer is using ORIGINAL HP ink

Non‑HP or expired ink often causes blank printing.

If you can, please check the cartridge label.
If you’re unsure, HP can help. Just send a photo of the cartridge labels, and we’ll confirm for you.

3. Run “Printhead Cleaning” from the printer menu

This fixes 80% of blank‑page issues.

On most HP printers:

  1. Go to Setup (gear icon)
  2. Choose Printer Maintenance
  3. Select Clean Printhead or Clean Cartridges
  4. Print the test page
  5. If still blank → Run Level 2 cleaning
  6. If still blank → Run Level 3 cleaning

After cleaning, try printing from your iPhone again.

4. Try printing a “Report” directly from the printer

This is VERY important.

Print a:

  • Quality Diagnostic Page, or
  • Printer Status Report

If those pages come out blank, the issue is with the ink/printhead, not the iPhone.

If those pages print normally, the issue is with Apple → printer communication.

Either outcome tells us exactly where to go next.

5. Restart your printer and your iPhone/iPad

A simple reset works wonders.

  1. Turn the printer OFF, unplug it for 60 seconds
  2. Plug it back in, turn it ON
  3. Restart your iPhone/iPad
  4. Try printing a simple Notes app page

AirPrint sometimes clears after a refresh.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
