Hi @BernieR3

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Printhead Error" issue you're facing, indicated by the flashing "!" on your display and a printhead alert for the tri-color ink cartridge, is a common problem with HP printers. It usually occurs when the printhead or the ink cartridges are not installed properly, or when there is debris or a clog preventing the printhead from functioning.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to resolve this problem:

Step 1: Turn Off and Unplug the Printer

Before troubleshooting, turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. This will ensure your safety and prevent any electrical issues.

Step 2: Open the Printer Access Door

  • Open the printer’s front access door to expose the printhead and ink cartridges.
  • Gently wait for the carriage (the moving part that holds the ink cartridges) to stop moving, and then access the printhead area.

Step 3: Remove the Ink Cartridges

  • Carefully remove both the color (tri-color) and black ink cartridges.
  • Take note of their positions so you can reinstall them correctly later.

Step 4: Clean the Printhead and Ink Cartridges

Cleaning the Printhead:

  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth and dampen it with warm water. Gently wipe the printhead contacts (where the ink cartridges connect to the printer). This will help remove any ink build-up or debris.
  • Be sure not to touch the nozzles directly, as this could damage the printhead.

Clean the Ink Cartridge Contacts:

  • Gently wipe the copper-colored contacts on the ink cartridges with a clean, damp cloth. These are the electrical contacts that communicate with the printer.
  • Be sure to dry them with a dry cloth afterward.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
