The printer is not aware of what it is printing.

The short answer is "No - by itself, there is no 'bypass' option."

Longer Answer

Printing documents in their original format (for example, Word or Excel) requires software that can interpret the document structure and submit configuration to the printer.

Simple applications understand PDF and Photos / Images.

Standard applications do not usually understand a document in its original format.

In Windows, the software needed to interpret Word (for example) is the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software.

For your mobile device (table, phone), the document reading / printing app might be Pages (for iOS).
