Hi @Dave-E1,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
When an HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer stops printing halfway and displays "printing" on the screen, it can be due to several issues. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem:
1. Check for Paper Jams
- Open the printer and inspect it for any paper jams. Remove any stuck paper carefully.
2. Restart the Printe
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
3. Check Ink Cartridges
- Ensure that the ink cartridges are properly installed and have sufficient ink. Replace any low or empty cartridges.
4. Clear Print Queue
- On your computer, go to the print queue and cancel any pending print jobs. Sometimes, a stuck print job can cause the printer to halt.
5. Update Printer Firmware
- Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer. You can do this through the HP Smart app or the HP website.
6. Check Network Connection
- If you are printing over a network, ensure that the printer is properly connected to your Wi-Fi network or that the USB cable is securely connected if using a wired connection.
7. Run Print and Scan Doctor
- HP offers a diagnostic tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor. Download and run this tool to automatically detect and fix common printing problems.
8. Reset the Printer
- Perform a hard reset of the printer. This can be done by turning off the printer, unplugging it, and holding down the power button for about 15 seconds. Then, plug it back in and turn it on.
9. Reinstall Printer Drivers
- Sometimes, reinstalling the printer drivers can resolve the issue. Go to the HP website, download the latest drivers for your printer, and install them.
10. Check for Error Messages
- Look for any error messages or error codes on the printer's display or in the printer software on your computer. These messages can give you a clue as to what the problem might be.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
