My daughter gave me a HP printer model number HP envy 6055E and I'm trying to set it up on my home network and it refuses to let me register because it's registered to my daughter, but I cannot find out how to do that. My daughter went in and unregistered, but it didn't help.

Hi @Scheb

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the situation so clearly. It’s genuinely frustrating when a hand-me-down HP Envy 6055e won’t let you register it—even after your daughter unregistered it.

This issue typically stems from HP+ activation and account binding, which links the printer to the original owner’s HP account and Instant Ink subscription.

Let’s walk through a focused recovery path to help you take full ownership and get the printer working on your home network.

1. Factory Reset the Printer

This clears account bindings and prepares the printer for re-registration.

  • Turn on the printer.
  • On the control panel, press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons together for 5 seconds.
  • The printer will restart and reset to factory defaults.
  • Wait for the lights to stabilize before proceeding.

2. Remove the Printer from Your Daughter’s HP Account

Even if she “unregistered,” the printer may still be linked.

3. Reinstall HP Smart and Re-Register

  • Download the HP Smart app on your phone or PC.
  • Open the app → Sign in with your own HP account (create one if needed).
  • Add the printer → Follow prompts to connect it to your Wi-Fi.
  • When prompted to activate HP+, choose whether to accept or skip (if available).

4. Check for Firmware Update

  • Once connected, go to Settings → Printer Maintenance → Update Firmware.
  • This ensures compatibility and clears any lingering registration logic.

Once these steps are complete, your printer should be fully registered to your account and ready to use. If it still refuses to register, let me know what message appears—I’ll guide you further based on that. You're close to restoring full control.
