We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

I finished setting up my printer and it wouldn’t print, I tried to forget the printer on the WiFi to reset it but then the next time I tried to join the printer WiFi, it required a password. What do I do now?

@LMG15, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Ah, that’s a frustrating situation — but totally fixable. It sounds like your printer is in Wi-Fi Direct mode, and it’s asking for a password because Wi-Fi Direct networks have their own security key, separate from your home Wi-Fi password.

Here's what you can do:

Option 1: Find the Wi-Fi Direct password

Most HP printers display the Wi-Fi Direct info on a label or through a printout.

Steps to get the password:

  • Print the Network Configuration Page:
  1. On most HP printers, press and hold the Information (i) button or press the Wi-Fi Direct + Information buttons together.
  2. This should print a summary page with the Wi-Fi Direct name and password.
  • Use that password to connect your phone/computer to the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct network.

Option 2: Reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi network (not Direct mode)

If you want the printer back on your home Wi-Fi instead of using Wi-Fi Direct:

Reset Wi-Fi setup:

  1. Go to the printer's control panel (physical buttons or touchscreen).
  2. Navigate to Network > Restore Network Settings or Wireless Settings > Restore (wording depends on your printer model).
  3. Use the HP Smart app on your phone or PC to set up the printer again:
  • Open HP Smart > Add Printer > Follow prompts to reconnect to your home Wi-Fi.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
