Hi @Katefuria

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

To fix your new HP printer’s scanner not responding on your Mac, make sure the printer is fully installed using HP Smart, reset the macOS printing system, and test scanning through Preview or Image Capture. Compatibility and driver setup are key.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to get your scanner working properly:

1. Complete Setup Using HP Smart

  • Download and install the HP Smart app from the Mac App Store.
  • Open HP Smart and add your printer.
  • Follow all setup prompts, including enabling scan features.
  • If the scanner still doesn’t respond, proceed to the next steps.

2. Reset the macOS Printing System

  • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list and choose Reset Printing System.
  • Re-add your printer by clicking the + button.
  • When prompted, choose AirPrint or the HP driver (if available).

3. Test Scanning from macOS Apps

  • Open Preview → go to File > Import from Scanner > [Your Printer Name].
  • Or open Image Capture and select your printer from the left panel.
  • Try scanning from these apps to bypass HP Smart and confirm scanner functionality.

4. Check Physical and Network Connections

  • Ensure the printer is powered on, connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your Mac, and not in sleep mode.
  • If using USB, confirm the cable is securely connected and not routed through a hub.

5. Update Printer Firmware and macOS

  • Visit HP’s support site and enter your printer model.
  • Download and install the latest firmware update.
  • Also ensure your Mac is running the latest version of macOS Sonoma or Sequoia.

6. Try HP Easy Scan (If Supported)

  • Some models support HP Easy Scan, available from the Mac App Store.
  • If your printer is compatible, this app may offer better scan control than HP Smart.

If scanning still fails, check for any error messages or codes on the printer display or in HP Smart. Let me know your exact printer model and macOS version—I’ll guide you with model-specific fixes.
