HP Smart Tank 7001

Contacted the help desk as my new HP Smart Tank 7001 would not connect to the internet.  The "chat" sent me to what I now know is a known scammer trying to sell add on software.  When they asked me send a copy of a check so the could collect their fee for a firewall I told them no way would I do that.  I checked them out and they showed up as a known scammer.  How in the world does a HP contact end up with a scammer?

Welcome to the HP Community --

You did the right thing -- you jumped away from the trap before it closed around you.

Good Job.

The request for a copy of a check is a particularly bad sign.

Your last question actually answers the query -

At no time,  in spite of what you think you were going, were you ever talking or connecting with HP.

Not.

Simply said:  It was not HP.

No legitimate company does what you describe.

Not one of them.

What?

The Internet is both wonderful and a dark and scary place.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of scam sites.

These rats look and sound like the actual help site of whatever company you are seeking.

Just because the site has the word "HP" or even a stolen logo from HP, does NOT mean it is HP.

Sneaky, "sound alike", "look alike", and dangerous -- these people mean you harm.

Beware of Fake Sites

The "Real Deal"

123.hp.com - Printer setup from the HP® Official site

https://123.hp.com/

The official HP 123 site is where you can find the appropriate (and free) software and drivers for your printer.

There are many “fake” sites listed (in search engines) for “123” – please make sure you are using the actual “HP” site.

If you are asked for money to correct "issues" on your printer or computer OR if the “help” wants to sell you software, threatens you, or wants to log into your computer, you are using a “fake” site. Do not give these people your information!
