I am trying to set up an M553 printer for wireless printing following the instruction manual. The problem is that I am supposed to connect to the printer's IP address and mine doesn't seem to have one. I have checked in the network settings and by printing a 'How to connect page' and the IPv4 is showing as 0.0.0.0 and the IPv6 is blank. I do have a host name, bonjour service name and a MAC address.
Not sure what I am doing wrong here. Do I need to change something in the settings?

Hi @Legal-Dan
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're encountering an issue where the printer’s IP address is showing as 0.0.0.0 or blank, which typically indicates that the printer is not yet properly connected to the network. The printer needs to obtain an IP address from your router in order to function wirelessly.
Here’s how you can troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
1. Check the Printer’s Network Connection
- Ensure Wi-Fi is enabled on the printer:
- Press the Wireless button (it may look like a Wi-Fi symbol) on the printer’s control panel.
- Alternatively, navigate through the control panel to Network Settings to see if the printer is attempting to connect to the Wi-Fi network.
- Check the Wireless Network Status:
- Print a Network Configuration Report or Wireless Test Report from the printer's control panel to gather more information about the current connection status. This should give you more details on whether the printer is connected to the network or not.
2. Connect to Wi-Fi Using the Printer’s Control Panel
If the printer is not connected to Wi-Fi, you can manually connect it:
- On the printer’s control panel, go to Wireless settings.
- Choose Wireless Setup Wizard. This will search for available Wi-Fi networks.
- Select your Wi-Fi network and enter the Wi-Fi password.
- After successful connection, the printer should receive an IP address from your router.
Once connected, check the printer’s IP address again by printing the Network Configuration Report.
3. Verify Router Settings
DHCP Settings: Ensure that your router’s DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is enabled. This allows devices on your network (including your printer) to automatically obtain an IP address from the router.
Check IP Address Range: Make sure your router's IP address range is correctly configured to allow devices like your printer to receive a valid IP address. If the router's DHCP range is too small, try increasing it.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
