HP Officejet 5742

Hi,

I have a HP Officejet 5742 all in one printer for home use. I have been trying to set it up for the HP instant ink services but I cannot seem to connect to the web services. The settings require a Proxy address and server, which we do not have as we are using a regular wireless router.

I understand that I need a code from the printer to activate the web services feature but I don't really know how to obtain it.

Can anyone advise please?

Thanks in advance.

Hi @GKD76,

I'd like to help!

I understand you are unable to connect to web services.

Try the below suggestions -

Restart the computer, printer, and router

To resolve any connectivity issues, restart the computer, printer, and router.

NOTE:

The following steps temporarily disconnect network and Internet connections, and require restarting your computer. Complete any tasks or downloads in progress before you continue.

Turn off the router by pressing the power button or disconnecting the power cord.

Turn off the printer.

Close all running programs on your computer, and then shut down the computer.

Press the power button or reconnect the power cord to the router, and then wait for the Internet activity light to display a normal connected status.

Turn on the printer.

Turn on the computer.

Try to turn on Web Services.

If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

Let's disable webservices and re-enable it

--->Touch on the wifi icon ((i)) on the printer, and take down the IP address

--->Open a web browser (ex Chrome or Mozilla) and type in the printer's IP

---> click on webservices and remove webservices and re-enable it

If the issue persists,

Check the Internet proxy server settings

For networks that use proxy servers, update the Web Services settings in the printer EWS with the proxy information.

Locate the Internet proxy settings.

Windows: Search Windows for Internet, and then click Internet Options in the list of results. On the Internet Properties window, click the Connections tab, select your network, if necessary, and then click Settings.
The network settings menu displays with the proxy settings.
From the EWS, click the Web Services tab, and then click Proxy Settings.

Type the Address and Port values for your proxy server connection, and then click Apply.

Try to turn on Web Services.

Update the printer firmware

HP regularly releases printer updates. Updating the printer firmware might resolve the issue.

Refer -- HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

Also, refer to the document to know how to enroll in instant ink- Enrolling in HP Instant Ink

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi Jay_G24

Thank you so much for responding to my post and for offering to help, it is greatly appreciated!

I have carried out all the actions you suggested, one by one, in the hope that there will be a positive result but sadly I have not been successful :(.

Firstly, I turned the router on after switching it off, and reconnected the printer and laptop to the wireless connection, however, there still was no change when I tried to turn on the web services on the printer - it is still showing a red cross against proxy settings.

So, I carried out the second step of inputting the IP address into an internet search engine to try and disable the web services - but I couldn't see the web services there in the first place to be able to disable it.

Next I tried to find the proxy settings via the search on Windows. There is no information in the LAN settings tab where the proxy settings can be found - it's blank and the only box ticked is : automatically detect settings under the Automatic configuration.

I have checked my printer to ensure it has the latest updates installed so not sure what else I can do to resolve this.

I will soon run out of ink so might just order a new cartridge to avoid being stuck.

Do you know if there is anything else I can try?

Thanks again!

Check the Internet proxy server settings

For networks that use proxy servers, update the Web Services settings in the printer EWS with the proxy information.

  1. Locate the Internet proxy settings.

    • Windows: Search Windows for Internet, and then click Internet Options in the list of results. On the Internet Properties window, click the Connections tab, select your network, if necessary, and then click Settings.

The network settings menu displays with the proxy settings.

    • Mac: Open System Preferences, and then click Network. On the Network window, click Advanced, click the Proxies tab, and then select your proxy, if necessary.

  2. Write down the Address and Port values for your proxy server connection.

  3. From the EWS, click the Web Services tab, and then click Proxy Settings.

    Clicking Proxy Settings
  4. Type the Address and Port values for your proxy server connection, and then click Apply.

  5. Try to turn on Web Services.

Update the router firmware

Outdated router firmware might affect performance, security, or prevent the router from accessing the Internet.

  1. Open an Internet browser, type the router IP address in the browser address bar, and then press Enter.

    NOTE:

These IP addresses, names, and passwords are provided for informational purposes only and might not work with your router model.

  2. Sign in to your router web-based setup page, if necessary.

  3. Locate the option to update the firmware. You might find the update option in the Administration, Utilities, Tools, or Maintenance menu. Refer to the documentation that came with your router or contact the manufacture for more information.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Thanks for getting back to me but I am afraid there is no change to my problem.

What I should have perhaps explained is we do not have a network with a proxy server. My husband tells me that ours being a wireless home broadband service, we do not need a proxy server hence I am unable to get the information required by the EWS.

I have taken a screenshot of my network settings to give you a better understanding of things:

Because of this I am not sure how else to connect to the web services. I hope this makes sense, I'd appreciate any advice you may be able to give me.

Thanks
