HP Deskjet 2541 All-in-One Printer

Trying to set up the printer through the wizard via "printer not listed" option [does not come up automatically]
I get the wifi password in for my home network just fine
it tells me to connect my wifi from my device to the printer, I enter in my printer password I obtained by pressing the information button and it printing the paper, that works as it should

then it asks me for a printer password in the wizard on the app, that does not work even though I enter the same thing

I have no idea of any other password or why it would require 2 and I'm completely stuck [this is needlessly complicated, why not just bluetooth it?]

Hi @Ibehereonce,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you are trying to set up the HP Deskjet 2541 via wireless and are encountering a password prompt in the setup wizard that’s confusing. Let's break down what might be happening and some potential solutions.

What’s likely going on:

  1. Initial Setup Wi-Fi Connection: You connected your device (e.g., computer, phone) to the printer’s temporary Wi-Fi network using the printer-generated password, which is the Wi-Fi Direct password.
  2. Second Password Prompt: During the wizard setup, it’s asking for a second password, which is likely referring to either the printer’s administrator password or the Wi-Fi Direct password again. This might be where things are unclear.

Steps to troubleshoot:

Check for the HP Default Administrator Password:

  • Some HP printers come with a default administrator password. If you never set one, it might be something simple like “admin” or left blank. Try entering "admin" or leaving the password field empty when it prompts you for the second password.

Confirm the Password:

  • If the setup process asks for the Wi-Fi Direct password again, you should be able to use the same one printed on the paper when you pressed the Information button on your printer.
  • Double-check to ensure the password you are entering matches what was printed on the page, paying attention to any special characters or capitalization.

Reset Printer Network Settings:

  • To reset the printer’s network settings, you can press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons on your printer at the same time for 5-10 seconds. This will restore the printer to its default network settings.
  • After resetting, try going through the setup wizard again from the beginning.

Try using HP Smart App or the Web Interface:

  • If the setup wizard on your device is being problematic, try setting up the printer using the HP Smart App (available for Windows, Mac, Android, or iOS).
  • Alternatively, you can access the printer's built-in web server by entering its IP address (obtained from the information sheet printed earlier) in a web browser and performing the setup from there.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Outdated firmware can sometimes cause these types of issues. Ensure the printer’s firmware is up to date by checking on the HP support website for any available updates.

Use USB for Initial Setup:

  • If the wireless setup keeps failing, consider setting up the printer via USB first to establish a connection, and then configure the wireless settings from within the HP software.

Next Steps:

  • Start with resetting the network settings and trying the setup again.
  • Ensure that both passwords you are using (Wi-Fi Direct password and potentially admin password) are correct.
  • If the problem persists, using the HP Smart app for setup or directly accessing the printer’s IP address might be a smoother path to resolve the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
