@Pam5704, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're trying to set up your HP printer using Ethernet, here's a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

Ethernet Setup (Wired Network)

To connect your printer via Ethernet, you do not need a USB cable. Instead, you’ll use a standard Ethernet cable (RJ-45 connector), the same type used for wired internet connections.

Steps to Connect Your HP Printer via Ethernet:

  1. Locate the Ethernet port on the back of your printer. It looks similar to a phone jack but slightly wider.
  2. Plug one end of a standard Ethernet cable into the printer’s Ethernet port.
  3. Plug the other end into an available LAN port on your router or network switch.
  4. Power on the printer and wait for it to connect to the network. Most HP printers will automatically obtain an IP address via DHCP.
  5. Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer’s control panel to confirm the IP address.
  6. On your computer, install the printer software using HP’s official setup tool:
  7. During installation, choose “Wired Network (Ethernet)” when prompted for connection type.

Need Help Finding the IP Address?

You can usually find it by:

  • Printing a Network Configuration Page from the printer’s settings.
  • Checking the printer’s control panel under network settings.

What About USB?

If you were asking about USB instead of Ethernet:

  • Most HP printers use a USB Type-B to USB Type-A cable.
  • Type-B plugs into the printer, and Type-A plugs into your computer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
