Microsoft Windows 11

Hi, I received a new Smart Tank 7605 printer today.  Followed instructions for set-up, but can't connect it to our WiFi as I need to register the printer Mac address (which I don't have) with our provider.  Followed instructions for setup and installing Ink and Heads.  The printer is now stuck with the message ' The HP Software is setting up your printer...'.   After waiting 30 minutes I've powered it off, unplugged, waited and tried again, it just comes to that message,  Meanwhile the HP Smart Software can't detect it via bluetooth or other means.  I see others have had similar issues.  As it's just a touch menu, with no options due to this message, there is nothing else I can try.  Please help / advise, I don't want to have to return it, particularly having filled the tanks with ink as per the instructions.

Hi @Chris-Hansard,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand that you have trouble with the printer and the HP Smart Tank 7605 getting stuck on: “The HP Software is setting up your printer..." This usually happens when the printer is waiting for final setup steps via the HP Smart app, but can't complete them due to network registration issues, especially when MAC address filtering is involved.

Step-by-Step Fix for Setup Freeze & MAC Address Registration

1. Find the Printer’s MAC Address

Since your network requires MAC address registration, here’s how to get it:

  • Option A: Use HP Smart App
    • Open HP Smart on your phone or PC.
    • Tap your printer > Advanced Settings (opens Embedded Web Server).
    • Go to Network > Network Summary or Wireless Settings.
    • Look for the MAC Address (also called Hardware Address).
  • Option B: Use Wireless Test Report
    • On the printer, press and hold the Wireless button until it prints a Wireless Network Test Report.
    • The MAC address will be listed on the report.

2. Register MAC Address with Your Provider

  • Share the MAC address with your network administrator or provider.
  • Once registered, restart your printer and router.

3. Clear the Stuck Setup Message

HP recommends this exact fix:

  1. Make sure ink and plain paper are loaded.
  2. Open the HP Smart app.
  3. Tap your printer > Printer Settings > Print Quality Tools > Align Printer.
  4. Complete the alignment using the printer’s touchscreen.
  5. Once the message clears, go back to HP Smart and tap Finish Setup.

4. Restore Wi-Fi Setup Mode (if needed)

If the printer still won’t connect:

  • Press and hold the Wireless button + Cancel button for 5 seconds.
  • The blue light should blink—this means it’s ready for setup again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi Vikram, thanks for this, however the problem I have is that there is no way that I have found to clear the 'HP Software is setting up your printer...' message on the touch display on the printer, and while it's displayed there is no way to show or access the menu or wireless button to access either of the options you suggest in step 1.  If I power the printer on/off it just restarts and comes back to that message.  Any thoughts?  Thanks!

Hi @Chris-Hansard,
