A technician that I was connected to by AI from a 'talk' window on a HP website demonstrated to me that the drivers in my Macbook Pro (Tahoe) were being compromised by threads and that I should buy with his facilitation, Sonic Wall Network Firewall. How do I back up or check out that this is legit?

Welcome to the HP Community --

You should probably assume the "talk" window was never anything connected with the actual HP company.

AI bots are now smart enough to compel your trust -- they are created and trained for the purpose, in fact.

Sneaky, smart, oh-so-nice, and lethal.

You were not close to HP, not HP adjacent --

HP does not do this -- no legitimate company does this.

Websites are built to look and sound like they are who and what you expect them to be.

-- What if? --

Letting folks you do not know into your computer, even if that computer is a Mac and might normally be protected against such intrusions, can invite problems you don't want.

For example, the intruders might be information thieves, scammers, or crooks searching your computer for your private information.

From your description, at the very least, they are trying to sell you something you do not need and cannot trust.

So, I don't speak Mac --

  • Ask your Apple Community for specific help for having someone take a walk-about in your system.
  • Unprotected documents and pictures might be a concern.

  • Change all your passwords, including those on your network (router).
  • Block the intruders from your network, phone, and email.
  • Consider contacting your bank.
  • Contact the local authorities and report the incident.
