I need to update my wifi - but the printer will not allow me to unless I enter my username and password. I don't recall ever setting these up (5 years ago). I cannot reset default settings without this info either. Any suggestions?

Hi @George458
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out!
I can certainly understand wanting to update your Wi‑Fi connection and finding that the printer is requesting a username and password that you do not recall setting up.
To help you better, could you kindly confirm:
- Are you being asked for the username and password when accessing the Embedded Web Server (EWS) through a web browser, or directly from the printer's control panel?
- Are you able to access any printer menus on the touchscreen, or does the password prompt appear before you can make changes?
In the meantime, kindly try the below steps and confirm :
1: Restore Network Settings
If you can access the printer touchscreen:
- Tap Setup (Gear icon).
- Go to Network Setup.
- Select Restore Network Settings or Network Defaults.
- Confirm the reset.
- Reconnect the printer to Wi‑Fi using the HP Smart app.
2: Use HP App to Reconnect the Printer
- Install and open HP App on your computer or mobile device.
- Select Add Printer.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to reconnect the printer to your new wireless network.
3: Restore Factory Defaults (If Accessible)
If the password prompt still prevents changes:
- On the printer control panel, navigate to Setup.
- Select Printer Maintenance.
- Choose Restore.
- Select Restore Factory Defaults and confirm.
Kindly refer to these HP guides: HP Printers - Change or Reconnect Wi‑Fi Settings - Click here
When these credentials are enabled, the printer may require them before allowing network changes or certain administrative actions. Restoring the network settings or factory defaults often clears the saved network configuration and allows the printer to be connected to a new Wi‑Fi network again.
I hope this helps.
