Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.
HP Recommended

My HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 is connected to my local network via an Ethernet cable directly to the router. I can print and scan from my Windows 11 PC without any problems.

However, scanning to a network share directly from the printer's control panel does not work.

I'm using the latest HP app. In the app, I configured a network share that I had previously created in Windows. I also created a dedicated user account named "scanbenutzer" and granted it full access to the shared folder.

When I try to scan to the network share from the printer's control panel, all the configured settings appear to be correct. However, after I press the Start Scan button, the printer displays a permanent "Connecting..." message. After a few minutes, an error message appears stating that a connection to "\\server\share_name" could not be established.

The router shows the printer as connected and online. The printer also has a statically assigned IP address.

It seems that communication works in one direction: my PC can access the printer, but the printer cannot access the network share on my PC.

I'm quite sure that this feature was working properly a few weeks or months ago, but it has stopped working for some reason.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this problem or how I can troubleshoot it?

I might be having trouble understanding exactly what you are doing.

Yes -- your explanation is clear and well written.

My fault.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 All-in-One Printer does not support Digital Send "Scan to Network Folder".

Digital Sending Standard FeaturesScan-to E-mail; Fax Archive to E-mail

Perhaps you are using some form of the Scan and save options supported by the printer and the HP App or (maybe) even the HP Scan software (part of the full drivers in Windows).

Why the confusion?

HP App -- perhaps not using Windows since you mentioned the original Share was created in Windows but you have configured something different -- can access and save mapped network drives on your Windows computer.  Mobile locations, when the HP App is run on a supported mobile device, do not generally require having created separate Share destinations, though I can imagine a scenario where  -- given the proper tools -- a network drive is connected to a mobile device.

The HP App, of course, is run from a supported device -- computer, tablet, phone.

The HP App can be used to create HP App Shortcuts to Save scanned content to supported (and signed-in) Cloud destinations.  Shortcuts are not run on the Printer and instead are called when using the HP App on a supported device (Computer, tablet, phone).

Next,

There is no mention in the documentation that this printer series supports Scan to Computer though the specifications do claim that "Front Panel Scan" is supported.  Different?  Same animal?  ??

Next,

About Scan to Computer

Any printer based Scan operation to a local or network destination might normally be accessed using some form of the installed full driver.  The HP Scan based shortcuts that are transferred to the printer control panel when "Manage Scan to Computer" is enabled on a supported Windows PC.   True, one of these Shortcuts might include a destination to other than a local folder.

Next,

The following are based on the limitations of this printer model and the general Windows based requirements for scanning to a network destination.

==============================

Mapped Network - Shared Destinations

If not done, consider using the IP address of the shared destination as opposed to the server name.

from

\\server name\Folder-name

to

\\192.168.x.xx\Folder-name

Is the shared destination a NAS?

Make sure (recheck) that the destination Shared folder is in group Everybody / Everyone.

-- Windows -- Network Discovery / File and Printing Sharing

Ensure that Network and Sharing are enabled.

  1. Example Settings > Network & internet > Advanced Network Settings > Advanced sharing settings
  2. Private Network > Network discovery = ON
  3. Checked “Set up network connected devices automatically”
  4. File and printer sharing = ON
