HP Color Laser MFP 179fnw

HP Laser Color Printer, MFP. bought 2 days ago

my Wifi Password contains an exclamation mark. I have tried every button on the keypad and unable to find it.

I have looked at various posts who say press the * multiple times, this does not work, other say select the "123" key. I dont have one.

Close to taking the printer back.

Hi @MachQ,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Unable to select exclamation mark when entering WiFi password!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Since your HP Color Laser MFP 179fnw does not have a direct "123" or special character key, you can try the following methods to enter an exclamation mark (!) in your Wi-Fi password:

Method 1: Use the Star (*) Key

  1. When entering the Wi-Fi password, press the * (star) key repeatedly to cycle through special characters.
  2. Try holding the * key for a second to see if it switches character sets.
  3. If that doesn't work, check if the # key cycles through symbols.

Method 2: Use HP Smart App for Setup

If you're struggling to enter the password manually, you can set up Wi-Fi using the HP Smart App on your phone or computer:

  1. Download and install HP Smart (available on iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac).
  2. Open the app and select your printer.
  3. Go to Wi-Fi Setup and enter your password using your phone or computer's keyboard.
  4. Complete the setup and connect your printer.

Method 3: Temporary Wi-Fi Password Change

If the above methods don’t work and you have access to your Wi-Fi router:

  1. Log into your router settings (via browser, usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1).
  2. Temporarily change the Wi-Fi password to something without special characters.
  3. Connect your printer.
  4. Change the password back to the original one (most devices will reconnect automatically).

If none of this work, returning the printer might be the best option, especially if the keypad doesn't allow entering essential characters.
