Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8138e All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I have the printer connected to Wi-Fi.

In the HP Smart App Ican see the printer. I click to set up and log into my Wi-Fi on the PC.

The HP Smart APP initially connects, asking me to allow on the printer.

After tapping on Allow on the printer, the HP Smart App stets for a while then states it could not connect.

I have rebooted the printer and laptop repeatedly. I have done a Network Restore on the Printer.

After the PC Reboot, the HO Smart App can no longer see the  printer.

I have my old printer set up in the HP Smart App (now offline). This would mean this has set up correctly in the past.

What should I do next to try and get this printer to install properly?  Are there non-HP Smart App drivers I can use?

Hi @bjhouston2,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how frustrating it must be to have your new HP OfficeJet Pro 8138e printer show up in the HP Smart App, only to fail during setup, especially after trying all the right steps like rebooting and restoring the network. You're doing everything right, and I’m here to help you get this resolved.

The error message in your screenshot suggests that your PC and printer are not on the same Wi-Fi network, or your PC might be connected via Ethernet. Even though the printer is connected to "Sweetie 2.4G", your PC might be on a different network (like "Sweetie 5G" or a guest network), which prevents the HP Smart App from completing setup.

Steps to Fix the Issue

1. Ensure Both Devices Are on the Same Network

  • On your Windows 11 PC, go to:
    • Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi
    • Confirm that your PC is connected to "Sweetie 2.4G", the same network as your printer.

2. Disable Ethernet Temporarily

  • If your PC is connected via Ethernet, unplug the cable and connect via Wi-Fi to the same network as the printer.

3. Use an IP Address to Add a Printer Manually

If the HP Smart App still doesn’t detect the printer:

  • On the printer, go to Settings > Network Settings > Wi-Fi Summary to find the IP address.
  • In the HP Smart App:
    • Click “Add Printer”
    • Choose “Add using IP address”
    • Enter the IP address shown on the printer.

Here’s HP’s official guide to help you locate and use the IP address: 🔗 Find the IP address for an HP printer | HP® Support

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
