Microsoft Windows 11

Dear all

I recently installed Windows 11 - everything was just fine for 2 moths but upon a sudden when starting my PC is requesting a user password - I never installed any password on this PC - but for the last month I'm simply not able to go through this very first step

I already changed my Microsoft password and the HP one - none of them seem to be ok - I cannot use my laptop - please help

Hi @Cindy202,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP PC is suddenly requesting a user password upon startup and you’re unable to access your system despite not having set up a password, it can be quite frustrating. Here are some steps you can follow to resolve this issue:

1. Verify User Account Type

  1. Check User Account Type:
    • If the PC is part of a corporate network or has a local account setup, it might be asking for credentials that were set up by an administrator or during initial setup.
    • Ensure that you’re entering the correct credentials associated with the account.

2. Use Microsoft Account Password

  1. Try Your Microsoft Account Password:
    • If you are using a Microsoft account to sign in, ensure you are using the correct Microsoft account password.
    • Verify by signing in to Microsoft Account on another device.

3. Restart in Safe Mode

  1. Restart in Safe Mode:
    • Force Shut Down: Hold down the power button for 10-15 seconds to force a shutdown.
    • Start Safe Mode: Turn on the PC and as soon as it starts, repeatedly press the F8 key (or Shift + F8 on some models) to access Advanced Boot Options.
    • Select Safe Mode from the list. This will load Windows with minimal drivers and may allow you to bypass the password issue.

4. Use Local Account

  1. Local Account Password:
    • If you have a local account password set up, try using it. If you’ve forgotten it, you might need to reset it.

5. Reset Password via Windows Recovery

Access Windows Recovery Environment:

  • Restart the PC and repeatedly press F11 (or Shift + F11) to enter the Windows Recovery Environment.

Use Password Reset Option:

  • Go to Troubleshoot > Reset this PC. You might choose to keep your files or remove everything.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to reset or refresh Windows. This can sometimes resolve password issues.

6. Reset Microsoft Account Password

Reset Microsoft Password Online:

  • Visit the Microsoft Account password reset page.
  • Follow the instructions to reset your Microsoft account password.

Reboot and Try New Password:

  • After resetting your password, restart your PC and try logging in with the new password.

7. Check for BIOS Password

  1. Verify BIOS/UEFI Password:
    • If your PC is asking for a BIOS/UEFI password, this is different from your Windows password. You might need to refer to your PC’s manual or contact HP support if a BIOS password was unintentionally set or forgotten.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
