HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I'm trying to configure the feature Scan to Network Folder on my HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw for both my desktop PC (Windows 10) and my new laptop (Windows 11).

I've successfully created two Quick Sets for both my computers. My problem is with user authentication since the Microsoft account that I use to log in to Windows is passwordless.

I have to use the option Use credentials of the user currently signed in under Log-In Authentication Option but the printer always fails to connect to the computers, the error says:

Spoiler
Scan Error - Unable to connect to the network. Check the network, and the try again.

In both Windows versions, I've create a share for a folder using Sharing > Advanced Sharing... In Permissions for Scan, I've given Full Control to both me as a user and to the Administrators group. I've done the same in the Security tab of the properties of the folders, to no avail. I've also tried the group Authenticated Users to no avail.

Of course, this used to work when the MS account had a password and the Everyone group was given Full Control in Permissions.

Do you have any idea how to fix this? Thank you.

Based on your experience and another Community member having beaten this same issue into a pile of small shavings,

You need to have both a UserID AND an account password for this to work.

If you are determined that the password is not important to your computer's security, assign the password as the classic and useless "123456" or some such.

Not convinced?

That's OK.

Just sharing what I've learned...

@Dragon-Fur,

Thanks for your reply but you've misunderstood my question.

A passwordless Microsoft account is not an account with a user ID and an empty password but instead it's an account that does not use any password but more secure features like an Authentication application or Windows Hello or a PIN.

Here are better explanations from the source: The passwordless future is here for your Microsoft account

If the option Use credentials of the user currently signed in relies on an account with a password then I will have to find another way to scan PDF from the ADF to my computers and any ideas are welcome.

You are perhaps right - maybe I don't understand that your situation is different.

What Microsoft is doing with PIN and "Hello" might not impact the current requirements of Scan to Network Folder requirements - or its limitations.

Regardless,

Withdrawing and minding my manners forthwith.

Smiling.

Good Luck.

Hello everyone,

I'm replying to my own question after running some successful tests.

I'm now using the Windows Scan application from the Microsoft Store.

In the Scan application, I select Source: Feeder and File Type: PDF then I click the Scan button after loading my documents in the ADF and I get the PDF on the PC of my choice.

From the printer, I can use Scan > Computer > Scan to xxxxx where xxxxx is the name of the computer of my choice but the printer scans from the flatbed and creates an image. May be this can be configured from EWS?
