HI @jodytbach,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP printer is asking for authentication, it typically means it requires a password or confirmation to connect to the network or access certain features. Here are some steps to troubleshoot this issue:
1. Check Wi-Fi Settings
- If your printer is connected to Wi-Fi, ensure that it’s connected to the correct network.
- Sometimes, if the network password changes or there are network settings updates, the printer may ask for authentication again.
2. Default Passwords
- If the printer is asking for a password, it might be for the wireless network or for access to the printer’s settings.
- Check the printer’s documentation or the label on the printer itself for default passwords (if applicable).
3. Reset Network Settings
- You can reset the network settings on your printer. This will disconnect it from the network and may resolve authentication prompts:
- Access the printer’s settings menu using the control panel or touchscreen.
- Navigate to Network or Wi-Fi settings and look for an option to reset the network.
4. Reconfigure the Printer
- After resetting the network settings, you will need to reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi network. Use the WPS button on your router if available, or manually enter the Wi-Fi credentials.
5. Update Printer Firmware
- Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up to date. You can check this through the HP Smart app or the HP website.
6. Check for Security Settings on Your Network
- If you have recently changed any security settings on your router, such as the network password or encryption type (WPA, WPA2, etc.), make sure the printer settings match.
7. Accessing the Printer's Web Interface
- If the printer is connected to the network, you may be able to access its web interface by typing its IP address into a web browser. This might allow you to change settings or check for issues.
- You can find the printer's IP address in the printer settings or by printing a network configuration page.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
