HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

My printer is connected via WIFI to my home network.

If I print from a computer connected with LAN cablt to my router then the print is ok.

If I print from a computer connected via WIFI to my router then the first page of a print shows a kind of "shadow picture".

Mac - cable - router - WIFI - printer -> ok

Mac - WIFI - router - WIFI - printer -> first page shows shadow picture and errors on right side

To narrow your search here my observations:

1. Current printer is OfficeJet Pro 8720 but happened before with older HP printer, too.

2. All computers are Macs.

3. Happens with all Macs, iMac, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, also iPhone ...

4. Happens since years and in different MacOS, is not a matter of MacOS.

5. Have latest HP software installed on Macs and iPhone. But happend with older versions, too.

6. Happens with different routers.

7. Only happens on first page, from page two of a print, no shadow.

For me it looks like a general problem with two WIFI connections during "waking up" on Macs.

Hi @Christopher1200,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're experiencing shadow prints when printing wirelessly from your computer to your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 printer, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try.

  • Check the printer settings: Ensure that the print settings on your computer are properly configured. Make sure that you haven't accidentally selected options like multiple copies or double-sided printing, which could cause shadow prints.
  • Update printer firmware: Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. Visit the HP support website, enter your printer model (OfficeJet Pro 8720), and check if there are any available firmware updates. Follow the instructions provided to update the firmware if necessary.
  • Check ink cartridges: Verify that the ink cartridges in your printer are correctly installed and have sufficient ink levels. Low or improperly installed cartridges can lead to print quality issues. Consider replacing any empty or faulty cartridges.
  • Perform a print head alignment: Many printers have a print head alignment feature that ensures optimal print quality. Check your printer's user manual or the HP support website for instructions on how to perform a print head alignment. Running this alignment process may help correct any misalignment causing the shadow prints.
  • Check for driver updates: Make sure that you have the latest printer driver installed on your computer. Outdated or incompatible drivers can result in printing problems. Visit the HP support website, enter your printer model, and download the latest driver for your operating system. Install the driver and restart your computer if necessary.
  • Adjust print settings: Open the print dialog box on your computer when printing and review the print settings. Ensure that the paper type and print quality settings are appropriate for your print job. You may want to try adjusting the print quality to a higher setting to see if it improves the print output.
  • Test with a different device: If possible, try printing from another device, such as a smartphone or tablet, to see if the shadow prints issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is specific to your computer or if it's a printer-related issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
