How can I reset the password for my printer?

Hi @Mike1296,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To reset the password for your HP printer, you generally need to reset the printer itself to factory settings. Here’s a general guide on how to do this.

  • Access the Printer’s Control Panel: Depending on your HP printer model, navigate to the printer’s control panel. Look for a "Setup" or "Settings" option.
  • Reset to Factory Settings: Find the option to reset the printer. This might be under a "Tools" or "Restore" menu. Follow the prompts to reset the printer to its factory default settings.
  • Confirm the Reset: The printer will ask for confirmation before proceeding with the reset. Confirm by pressing the appropriate button or following on-screen instructions.
  • Wait for the Reset: The printer will reset itself, which may take a few minutes. Once the reset is complete, the printer should restart automatically.
  • Set Up the Printer Again: After the reset, the printer will be restored to its original settings, including the default password (if applicable). You may need to set it up again as if it were a new printer, including connecting it to your WiFi network and setting preferences.
  • Change the Password (Optional): Once connected, you can change the WiFi password through the printer’s settings menu to something more secure and easier to remember.

If your printer has a touchscreen display, the process may be more intuitive through on-screen menus.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

  • Hi Alden4,
  • I apologize for not getting  back to you sooner. I've followed your directions several times, to no avail. Some of the things you mentioned aren't exactly like my printer, so here is what I have, and perhaps more precise instructions could follow: HP OfficeJet Pro 6968 All-in-One
  • I sure do appreciate you trying to help me.
