We have been using Wireless Direct printing with this Officejet Pro 8610 for months. It was working fine, until suddenly one day when you attempt to connect to the printer's network, it loads for maybe a second before giving up on connecting with the printer. I've tried everything I can think of, listed below:
- turning off and on again
- unplugging, waiting, plugging it back in and restarting
- checking for updates
- partial reset
- full reset
- plugging computer directly into printer with wired connection
I need this printer to be able to stay off of a network, while providing it's own network to devices to print from. When I plug in a laptop to attempt to print through usb, it doesn't recognize that there's a printer connected at all. I imagine this is something with the firmware, but HP Smart states that are no available updates. I'm at a loss, please help

Hi @reymifasol,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding WiFi Direct Not Connecting!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Try these steps:
Verify WiFi Direct Settings
Make sure WiFi Direct is enabled on your printer:
- On the printer control panel, touch the WiFi Direct icon or navigate to the WiFi settings menu.
- Ensure that WiFi Direct is turned on.
- Make sure the number of connections allowed is not limited to fewer devices than required.
Restart Devices
Turn off both the printer and the device attempting to connect via WiFi Direct:
- Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
- Turn off the computer or mobile device trying to connect.
- Wait for about 10 seconds, then plug the power cord back into the printer and turn it on.
- Turn on the computer or mobile device.
Update Printer Firmware
Check if the printer firmware is up-to-date, as outdated firmware can cause connectivity issues:
- Visit the HP website: HP Drivers and Software
- Enter the printer model (Officejet Pro 8610) and check for firmware updates.
- Download and install any available updates.
Check Device Compatibility
Ensure that the device you are trying to connect is compatible with WiFi Direct:
- Confirm that WiFi Direct works with the device by checking the device's network settings.
- If possible, test WiFi Direct with another device to determine if the problem is specific to one device.
Reset Network Settings
Perform a network settings reset on your printer:
- On the printer control panel, navigate to Settings > Wireless Settings > Network Reset.
- Follow the prompts to perform a network reset.
- Re-enable WiFi Direct and try connecting again.
I hope this helps.
