HP Deskjet 2700 All in One
Microsoft Windows 11

I have a DeskJet 2700 All-in-One printer connected to my desktop PC (Windows 11) via WiFi.  My son has a HP laptop with Windows 11, and wishes to print from that to my printer.  I put the printer into WiFi setup mode, and my son downloaded HP Smart to his laptop and ran the 'Add a Printer' operation.  This started and ran for a few minutes, got past the 'press flashing information button' step, but finally stopped and displayed a message saying that it was unable to connect.

Can you please advise why this should be?

Hi there @RonPoole, and welcome to HP Support Community!

Thank you for reaching out with your concern. I'm glad to assist you today.

I understand you're trying to connect your son's HP laptop (Windows 11) to your HP DeskJet 2700 All-in-One printer over Wi-Fi, but HP Smart is unable to complete the setup. Let's walk through a few steps to resolve this:

Ensure Printer Is on the Same Wi-Fi Network

  • Make sure the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as both your desktop and your son's laptop.
  • You can confirm this by printing a Wireless Network Test Report:
    • Press the Information button (i) and the Wireless button together on the printer.
    • Look for the SSID (network name) and ensure it matches your home Wi-Fi.

Reset Printer Network Settings (if needed)

  • If the printer was previously connected to a different network or setup failed:
    • Press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons together for 5 seconds until the wireless light starts blinking.
    • This resets the network settings and puts the printer into setup mode.

Install HP App Properly

Complete Setup via HP Smart

  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • When prompted to press the flashing Information button, do so.
  • If it fails again, try restarting the laptop and printer, then retry the setup.

Alternative: Manual IP-Based Installation

If HP Smart still fails:

  • Get the printer’s IP address from the Wireless Network Test Report.
  • On the laptop:
    • Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device.
    • Choose Add manually > Add a printer using TCP/IP address.
    • Enter the printer’s IP and follow the prompts.

Install Full Feature Software (Optional)

If the suggestions helped solve the problem, please let us know by clicking “Accepted Solution.” It really helps fellow users find quick answers.

A quick “Yes” also goes a long way in showing appreciation!

Take care and happy computing!

Hi Max3Aj

Many thanks for your prompt reply to my message.

I printed out the Wireless Network Test Report as you advised and it indicated that I had two networks based on my router.  Quite how this happened I have no idea, but it explains the problem that you outlined exactly.

I have taken the necessary action and all is well.

Thank you for your excellent support.
