1 - Are you printing from the MAC directly to the printer by way of WiFi direct?
If your Mac is using the 5ghz band then force the printer to use the same 5ghz band.
Note that the 2.4ghz band has a better reach such as going through walls.
Use WiFi direct if you do not have a modem or do not want to give anyone your WiFi password but you want them to print on your printer: Setup video using a smartphone with bluetooth is here
2 - The printer is connected to the modem / router using WiFi but loses connection to the Mac.
It may be going to sleep, and when it wakes up it gets a different IP address than the Mac knows. This typically happens on flex systems. You need to access the modem, find the printer, and make the IP address fixed so it does not change. This is preferable to programming the printer not to sleep and is required on flex networks (WiFi boosters or repeaters)
This video shows how to connect to a modem.
